Our first stop was this small city at the end of the world. Ushuaia is about 40,000 people, and was a manufacturing city, but their factories have closed. So, this enterprising little town has turned to tourism.
Nestled in the Andes, and "surrounded by Chile" as the locals say, Ushuaia is a fascinating area. During the northern summer months, Alaskan dog sledders bring their huskies to Ushuaia to train. The PanAmerican Route 3 ends in Ushuaia, running the entire lengths of the Northern and Southern Continents!
"Ushuaia" means "Going Westward" in the local Shamanic language because the islands turn westward.
It is a beautiful area for hiking, mountain climbing, and exploring!
